On this photo, one can see the bottom of the 3 forestays ( the boat is a "cutter" ) : genoa, jib, and a " trinquette". The 2 forestays designed to haul genoa and gib go to the top of the mast. The third and short one goes from the deck to the " barres de flèche " or just above. barres de flèche = spreaders ?
